I’d like an alarm, but which one? And what should I think of?

Very wise to think of an alarm system for your home or business. The number of burglaries in the Netherlands is increasing, and people start to feel more unsafe as a result. Unfortunately, there are many alarm systems for sale that are of very poor quality. Often these systems are also wireless, and work on Wi-Fi. As we described on previous pages, you should never choose a system with Wi-Fi, because its range is very poor. The system with the largest wireless signal is the security system of AJAX, that’s why we are FAN, and we offer this brand as the only one in our webshop. So when choosing a security system, always pay attention to how it works, and what its quality is. Of course it is also important to know whether an expensive subscription needs to be taken out. Fortunately, the AJAX alarm system is free of monthly charges.


What do I spend on average for a complete system?

That depends very much on the size of the surface and the number of rooms you want to secure. Please note that the following is possible with AJAX. If you have a detached house, with a private garden, it is already possible to use 4 outside detectors to protect all sides of the house against burglary attempts. A burglar will always have to arrive via garden or driveway before he can enter the house. With 4 detectors outside, you don’t need any more detectors inside. The first detection will always come from the outside detector. This will save you a lot of costs. Too often we hear that people want to secure every room and door in the house separately. But then the burglar is already inside as soon as the first alarm arrives. So always consider one or more detectors outside, not only for faster detection, but also to save money because you don’t have to protect every room separately inside. Why do we only sell AJAX?

As you can read on our website the system offers many advantages which you will not find with any other brand of security system. Also the security jury in Europe has awarded this brand as best for several years in a row, and every year there are beautiful new products that take your security to a higher level. Therefore, it is no longer useful to offer other brands.

If you give honest advice, and say you know the ins and outs of security systems, it is impossible to advise another brand system, simply because that system is worse than the AJAX system.

What other brands are worse in?
Wireless range is much less far. Detection only takes place inside the house, instead of in your garden or driveway. Detection always takes place too late. The quality of the detectors elsewhere is much lower. False alarm? Surely no one wants that!


What makes the AJAX security system so unique?

The possibility of early detection outside the home. Thanks to the extremely good wireless signal and the long battery life of all detectors up to 7 years, you can easily place the products anywhere. What are the Optex detectors, and why are they so expensive?

We are FAN of AJAX, but that does not mean that other brands of detector manufacturers are unusable. The Optex brand has existed for a very long time, and is also known for its solid products. However, Optex does not make complete alarm systems, and only offers detectors which alarm system manufacturers can integrate into their system. For example, it is possible to use an AJAX transmitter, a separate transmitter from AJAX, to operate an Optex detector within the AJAX system, and this completely wireless. When do you use a different brand of detector? For example if you are looking for something that AJAX does not yet have in its range. The advantage of the Optex detector is that it has a detection angle of 180 degrees, and can therefore protect a full side. There are situations in which this Optex detector is better suited as for example the MotionProtect Outdoor from AJAX with a 90 degree detection angle. However, in 98% of all situations the use of an AJAX outdoor detector is preferred. We will be happy to determine which outdoor detector is best suited for your situation. This strongly depends on the location where a detector can be mounted in your garden. In a corner mounting of 90 degrees, the same area could be secured as with a 180 degree detector mounted on one side, not at an angle.


System information

How can I operate the system?

Installation and operation are done via your smartphone. In addition, you can use a remote control (SpaceControl) and a code control panel, in Belgium they sometimes call this a keyboard. At AJAX this product is called KeyPad. With all these products you can easily switch the system on or off, and you can also use the panic button to immediately draw attention from your surroundings by making the siren sound.


How am I warned if someone wants to break in?

There are several possibilities. If you’re at home during a burglary, you can hear the siren go off. In addition, no matter where you are in the world, you will always receive a push notification on your smartphone with the reason for the alarm. In addition, you can optionally choose to be called by the system itself, if this attracts your attention more than a push notification. But the sound of a push notification is so loud that we cannot imagine it. On iPhones, you can also set this push notification as a criticism, so that every important message from the AJAX app is always reported loudly, even when your iPhone is on standby. So you won’t miss a single urgent message.


What kind of connection do I need to make the system work?

A slow internet connection is sufficient for the system to function properly. Simply click an internet cable from your router into the AJAX Hub and power it, and you’re ready to connect wires.

As an extra backup, AJAX in the Netherlands (on request) now also provides a SIM card which can be placed in the Hub. This takes care of the connection to the AJAX cloud when the standard internet connection via your router fails.


Am I unprotected when my internet at home is gone?

No, the system will continue to operate, and the siren will go off as soon as someone enters the secure area. You will receive a notification on your smartphone immediately after losing the connection from the Hub to the cloud. Loss of any signal without being aware of it via your smartphone is therefore impossible.


Can the wireless signal be blocked?

The frequency of AJAX’s Jeweller signal can be switched on two different channels. As soon as one of the frequencies experiences too much noise, all detectors automatically switch to the better frequency. In addition, the quality of the signal is continuously monitored. As soon as someone deliberately wants to disrupt the signal, you will receive a message on your smartphone.


Is a wireless system as secure as a wired alarm system?

The AJAX Hub is constantly connected to the AJAX cloud, and the detectors are connected to the wireless signal called Jeweller. The detectors are checked every 6 seconds for presence and correct operation. As soon as one of the detectors fails to report, it is detected by the Hub. The Hub will then immediately put a notification in the Cloud of the detected event. Since your own smartphone is constantly connected to the same Cloud via the AJAX application, you will immediately receive a notification on your phone. In other words, your phone will know every 6 seconds that every detector is working correctly and everything is fine. This technique of constant connection to the cloud of all products does not make the system as secure as a wired system, but even better! A wired system is almost always connected to a telephone line, which connects to an alarm center. This connection is tested in 98% of companies only once every 24 hours. Suppose the telephone line is defective, you will only find out many hours later that alarm messages do not arrive at the alarm centre. That doesn’t happen with an AJAX alarm with a constant cloud connection. It tests the connection between each component constantly, and from 2 directions.


Why are the menu items in the settings of any device light grey?

The full operation of the system can be done via your smartphone. Changing the settings of one of the connected products can therefore also be done via your smartphone. These menu items to change programming are only selectable when the system is not switched on. So if the alarm system is not monitoring. If you can’t select the settings, switch the system out of guard mode. If the items below still remain gray, make sure the Hub’s power supply is connected, and the Internet connection is active.


How many sirens can be used in total?

The AJAX Hub supports up to 100 devices, but sirens can be added up to 9 simultaneously. Normally an indoor siren (HomeSiren) in combination with an outdoor siren (StreetSiren) is chosen. We have not yet seen more sirens sounding simultaneously as a wish. Usually this is more than enough noise to wake up the whole street. Of course all sirens are adjustable in 3 different volume settings and the siren time is adjustable between 3 and 180 seconds. With each new registration of movement, the siren will start counting again, until the set time has passed. Of course you can always switch off the system / siren earlier with the app or the remote control.


How is the system maintained?

All AJAX products, with the exception of the central unit called the Hub, run on batteries. These batteries last for an average of 3 to 7 years, after which they need to be replaced. Replacing them is easy, and the batteries are cheaply available in our webshop.

In addition, all products receive regular software updates because they are constantly connected to the internet. The system is not only older, but also better and more reliable, because every software update has an improvement and an extension of the possibilities.


Why do you need to create a space in the App, and how much?

To register a random detector you must create at least 1 room. When logging in you will be asked to divide the detector in a certain room. This is done so that you can easily see in which room the detector is installed. A room is not the same as a group.


How do you create different groups?

You can create one or more groups using the AJAX Hub settings. Select the Hub from your device list and press the cogwheel at the top right. Select “groups” and create two or more groups. Don’t forget to activate group modes. From then on you will no longer see an image of the AJAX SpaceControl in the bottom right menu item under “Remote”, but the different groups you have just created. Clicking on one or more of these groups will activate the detectors that are logged in under that group. Enable all groups simultaneously by clicking on the blue round ring at the bottom that says “enable”.


What do you have to fill in at group when registering a detector?

This option is only visible if you have chosen to activate groups in the AJAX Hub settings.

Suppose you have a MotionProtect Outdoor motion detector, then it makes sense to place it in a group called outdoor or garden. You can then choose to only activate the detectors outside during your presence in the house, by only activating group outside or garden. The detectors in your house will then not be active, and you can move around freely. If you go out and there is no one left in the house, you can also activate the group you have created for the detectors inside. This way, you are free in which area you turn on or off.


Is it mandatory to create groups in the AJAX app?

No, by default the settings of the system are such that you can switch the complete system on or off with one button. When opening the AJAX application on your smartphone, you will see the remote control of the system in the lower right corner “Remote”. This allows you to operate the system.


Why is there always a number “1” on the Hub device?

The number indicates that there is a message with this device. If you only connect the Hub with Ethernet (internet cable), and do not insert a SIM card into the Hub, you need to disable “mobile” in the Hub’s settings. The number “1” indicates that the SIM card is not found when “mobile” is turned on. By turning “mobile” off, you indicate that you do not want to insert a SIM card into the Hub, and the message disappears.


What is the difference between day and night mode?

You can switch on the system in 2 different modes, in a day mode and in a night mode. In the programming you can choose to have a certain running-in time in which the siren does not emit a loud siren but only modest beeps. This can be useful during the day as well as during the night. Depending on your wishes, you can, for example, choose to immediately ring all alarm bells during the day when something or someone is detected, and at night, when you are probably sleeping at home, to first sound a more modest beep when someone or something is detected. Then you have the time to wake up more calmly and investigate what could be going on. In this way you make sure that you don’t wake up the whole street in case of a possible false alarm, and you are able to break off the walk-in delay before it would switch to a loud siren. What’s a walk-in delay?

With each detector you can choose to let it work day or night based on a walk-in delay. As soon as the detector detects something, the siren will not immediately sound loud, but first a beep will be heard, which can be adjusted to the volume according to your wishes. We find this ideal in the nighttime hours. Suppose, for example, that your son comes home once after stepping out and forgets that the alarm in the garden or house is on, then the entire neighborhood is not immediately awake. Because a soft beep from the inside siren can be heard first, you are the only one who hears this, and can see who is there or what is going on. You then have an X number of seconds to turn off the soft beeping, before the real loud inside and/or outside siren goes off. That’s nice for your neighbors.


What is the difference between the available AJAX hubs?

AJAX has 3 different versions of the Hub in its range. Usually the cheapest version, the standard Hub, will suffice. We explain the different possibilities per Hub on the product page of the different Hub’s, but also on the system information pages which you can access via the menu.


Why do some detectors have a plus version?

The DoorProtect, FireProtect and MotionProtect all have a plus version as well. This means that they can do just a little bit more than the standard version. The differences can be found at the products in the webshop. In short, this is what it boils down to: In the plus version, the door contacts also respond to vibration and tilting. The smoke detector reacts not only to smoke, but also to carbon monoxide, and the motion detector also has a built-in radar module to verify the detected heat movement of the pir-sensor. This may be necessary when using a motion detector in rooms equipped with fireplaces, air conditioners, open windows and other things that can cause heat flows in the air to which the ordinary detector could react. Thanks to an extra built-in radar module, which detects movement not only on heat difference, this gives a more reliable detection.


What is PIR with a motion detector?

PIR stands for Passive InfraRed. This means that detection of movement takes place on temperature difference of the environment. As soon as a person walks through the protected area, this will generate an observation of heat on the sensor of the motion detector. This means that a standard motion detector will generate an alarm as soon as something is visible near 37 degrees.


What is radar with a motion detector?

Radar is usually used together with a PIR sensor. First a PIR sensor detects a movement, which will be checked for authenticity by the radar sensor. If both sensors detect the same movement, an alarm is generated. This makes the AJAX MotionProtect Plus, which is equipped with PIR and radar, extremely suitable for installation in rooms that often have to deal with large temperature fluctuations caused by sun, heater, air conditioning.


When do I use an AJAX MotionProtect Outdoor, and when do I use a Curtain?

Both detectors are particularly suitable for mounting on the outside of the house. The Outdoor views an area of 15 meters at an angle of 90 degrees. So you use this detector to protect large areas up to 175M2. The MotionProtect Curtain also has a range of 15 meters, but only looks at an angle of 6 degrees. This makes it possible to protect very specific areas, such as directly next to the house.

Both detectors help ensure that undesirable persons are detected as early as possible. Have another look at the detection method of these two outdoor detectors, and you will understand that they are necessary to actually prevent a burglary. These detectors make AJAX unique.


How far can the MotionCam detector identify the movement?

The MotionCam detector can identify movements at a distance of up to 12 metres.


On which side of the door should the magnet be installed?

Magnets must be installed parallel to the detector, on the right hand side. There is a special marking on the detector that indicates where the magnet should be placed. The small magnet works at a maximum distance of 1 cm from the detector, while the large one – up to 2 cm – works.


Does AJAX fit in a smart-home house?

AJAX introduces several new products to the market every year. 2020 will be the year that more smart-home related products become available. Recently, the AJAX Socket has become available, this is an adapter that you can place in any wall socket and can react on or off or set off an alarm. As an example: Place the Socket between a high wattage safety light, which will illuminate the entire garden as soon as the alarm goes off. When motion is detected in the garden, the Socket will turn on the high wattage security light. In addition to the loud alarm, potential thieves will also be alarmed.


What’s that story about being market leader?

AJAX is a fast-growing company, which in just a few years has gone from a local supplier to delivery in over 93 countries. As a result, the workforce and production capacity have also increased significantly, and seem to double every year. By 2020, AJAX is expected to become Europe’s largest supplier of security products, with an expected production of 440,000 units per month.


Does AJAX also work with smart speakers?

At the moment, the system does not yet work with smart devices such as Amazon echo. Because of the constant free software updates, it may be a matter of time before this becomes possible. The future will tell.


What happens if I don’t respond to an alarm myself?

Depending on which Hub you have, you can allow a minimum of 50 users to access the system, or receive alerts. If none of them respond to an alert, the system’s siren will deter possible intruders.

If you have work that causes you to never be able to call the police in case of an intrusion, and there is no one else with access to the system who wants or can do this, consider linking one of the many alarm centres to the system. Through the AJAX application you can easily see which companies work with AJAX to take care of reporting to the police or fire brigade. There are more than 500 different companies available worldwide, which you can let us know at the push of a button that you are interested in. This way, whatever your profession, you are always assured of the right alarm follow-up. Please note: These services are subject to costs.


Do you always need an emergency call centre?

An emergency call centre costs a subscription fee. And with the AJAX alarm system, you can be your own switchboard, because you are always the first to receive every report directly on his or her smartphone. Calling the police in the event of a burglary? You can easily do that yourself. This way, you are not tied to costs, and the system remains extremely inexpensive to use.


Does an emergency center always call the police directly?

No, there are European rules. In the Netherlands, it is customary for an alarm centre only to inform the police as soon as at least 2 detectors register something shortly after each other. This rule was created because it happened too often, especially with more old-fashioned systems, that a detector gave a false alarm. Precious police time was then wasted by an empty burglar alarm. That is why the police now only come when a report is more verified, for example by multiple detectors that go into alarm. The exact conditions can be requested from the various power stations.


Do I always need a camera with an alarm system?

A camera can be useful to verify what triggered the alarm. Imagine you are abroad, and your alarm goes off, then without a camera you don’t immediately know what could be going on. A simple outdoor camera can offer a solution. A much ordered camera, which is completely wireless and battery operated, is the Ezviz C3A. Because it is not connected to any cable, it can be mounted anywhere. Place 1 camera outside, and thanks to the very wide lens opening angle you can view up to 3 sides of a house. Another, but more expensive option is this, but only possible inside the house. The use of AJAX MotionCAM motion detectors. These show a picture of the cause of the alarm on your smartphone within 9 seconds after the first registration. These are only indoor detectors. Registration / control of movement outside will always have to be done with a separate camera.


Can a camera set off my alarm?

No, a camera is always programmed separately from the system. If a camera detects a movement it will not trigger the siren of the AJAX alarm. This is a good thing, because the motion detection of cameras is many times less reliable than a real motion detector that is specifically produced for that purpose. To prevent any kind of false alarms, detection based on camera images is therefore never possible. Camera images only serve to check what happened afterwards as soon as AJAX reports that something is going on.


My iPhone asks “Allow critical notifications” when installing the app. What’s this?

Notifications on your smartphone come in all day, especially if you’re on social media a lot. Or think of the many WhatsApp messages you get from your friends. To make a clear distinction between all these notifications, and to hear notifications that really matter, you can choose to let the AJAX application allow critical notifications.

A critical alert is louder and clearer than a standard alert, and a critical alert always sounds, even if your phone is on silent / no sound. By allowing critical notifications, you’ll never miss a notification from your AJAX system again. But it is as safe as a burglar at your doorstep.


I get a false burglary report on one of my outside detectors, what can I do?

The best thing to do is to contact us so that we can determine together what the reason for this may be. Usually it is a wrong setting, which is easy to adjust. Of course, a detector never hangs in an identical place with customers and each location requires a personal setting depending on the environment. We can always ensure that an outdoor detector works flawlessly and is immune to dogs, cats and other plants. Preferably send a photo via chat or WhatsApp of the location of the detector in question so that we can immediately see what the solution is.


Can a dog or cat generate an alarm?

With an incorrect installation position and/or incorrect settings this is possible. Consult the manual of the product for installation advice or contact us. We can always indicate the best location and setting at your location. This way you can be sure of a reliable operation of the system.


Questions about detectors

What does “dependent signal processing” mean in MotionProtect Curtain settings?

If you mount this detector on the outside of the house, it is of course not allowed to detect dogs and cats. In this situation, switch on the “dependent signal processing” function in the settings of the MotionProtect Curtain. This setting ensures that the detector only generates an alarm when two detection lines are crossed at the same time. Small animals such as cats will not be detected. If you don’t turn this function on, because it is turned off by default, the detector will pass on an alarm with every motion detection.

Note, the detection range is reduced in the activated dependent signal processing mode. The range in activated mode, depends on the sensitivity as follows: Low sensitivity 6 meter range, normal sensitivity 7 meter range, high sensitivity 8 meter range.

If you use this detector inside your home, and you do not activate the “dependent signal processing” because you do not have a dog or cat in your home, then the range is 11, 13 or 15 meters.


At what height should I mount the MotionProtect Outdoor?

This outdoor detector may be mounted at any height between 80 centimetres and 130 centimetres. We recommend an exact height of 100cm for best results. Of course you can put each detector in a “Detection zone test” via the settings of the detector. With this MotionProtect Outdoor detector with 2 sensors you can then choose to test the “upper sensor”, the “lower sensor” or the “anti-mask” function. With the blue button you start the full detection zone test. If you choose this option, 2 lights will light up on the detector. Then move (walk) through the area you want to check. Every time one of the 2 sensors registers your movement, the light of that sensor will go out. An alarm is only generated as soon as both lights go out almost simultaneously, that is when both sensors detect your movement. If you see only 1 of the 2 lights flashing, for example only the upper one and never the lower one, then the detector is hanging too low. If you only see the lower one flashing, then the detector is hanging too high. Make sure that both lights blink just after each other when testing the area, then the correct height and sensitivity is chosen.

Note: At the back of this detector you set the viewing angle of the lower sensor. This is adjustable between 3 and 15 meters. The upper sensor always looks straight ahead, and the lower sensor looks under a certain angle, which you adjust with the distance switch. For example, if you set the switch to 15 meters, the lower sensor will almost touch the ground at 15 meters from the detector. If you set it at 3 meters, the radius of the lower sensor will hit the ground at 3 meters. Only when both beams of the 2 sensors are crossed, an alarm will be made.


When do I opt for an entry delay time at a random detector?

Without delay, the detector will immediately sound the siren on the first registration of movement, (Or directly on opening the door if you have a DoorProtect). If you do set a delay time, the siren will only go off after this time has elapsed. This is necessary if, for example, you switch off the system with an AJAX KeyPad hanging in the hall at the front door, and protect this area with a MotionProtect motion detector. As soon as the detector detects your presence, the switch-off delay starts. During this time, you need to enter the correct shutdown code on the KeyPad. You only choose a certain delay time for detectors that are installed in a room where you need to be to operate the system. If you work with an AJAX SpaceControl, the system’s remote control, you naturally switch the system on and off as soon as or when you are outside your home or garden. Then no detector needs to be set to slow down. The range of a remote control is over 1000 metres, so operation can always take place outside the plot.


When do I choose a delay time at departure?

Suppose you have a KeyPad at the front door, and also an outside detector on your driveway, but you want to use the KeyPad to activate your alarm, but you also want to have time to drive away with your car in the driveway. Then you can set the departure delay so that only after the set number of seconds, the detector to which you set the departure delay will send an alarm message. For example, in this example, you could say that the motion detector in the KeyPad room, and the detector outside are both set to a departure delay of 180 seconds. You then have 3 minutes to leave with your car, and only after that are the detectors switched on.

The alternative is of course that you do not set a departure delay, and with the remote control the system is switched on as soon as you have left your driveway. Then you don’t have to rush to leave.


What are the buttons on the remote control used for?

If you hold the remote control with the open circle down, the function of the 4 buttons is as follows:

Top right: Turning off the system. Top left: Turn on the system in day mode. Bottom left: Turning on the system in night mode. Bottom right: Panic button. If you hold down the panic button for a few seconds, the siren will sound immediately (provided it is set in the Hub’s settings) and each paired smartphone will receive a notification of pressing it.

If you press the panic button on the virtual remote control of the AJAX application, not only will each paired smartphone be notified, but also the exact GPS location of that smartphone that pressed the panic button will be transmitted to the other paired smartphones.


What’s the attenuation test?

The Ajax protection system makes it possible to perform tests to check the functionality of the connected devices. The tests do not start immediately, but within a period of 36 seconds when using the default settings. The start of the test time depends on the settings of the detector scanning period (the section on “Jeweller” in the Hub settings).

Test is available under: Ajax app > Devices > DEVICE > Settings > Attenuation Test

The test is based on the European standard EN50131, grade 2. It allows users to artificially reduce or increase the power of the radio transmitter, simulating the changing environment in the building to control the stability of the communication between the device and the hub.

The test is recommended to be carried out together with the signal strength test. A total of three levels of signal strength are available for the test:

  • Automatic – the unit automatically adjusts the power level of the transmitter (standard mode).
  • Damping – the unit artificially reduces the signal strength of the unit by 6 dB.
  • Maximum – sets the maximum power level of the transmitter.

After performing the signal strength test, it is advisable to select the damping option and check the signal strength again over a period of not less than one minute. If the detector shows reliable signal reception (2-3 bars), the location has been selected correctly.

At the end of the test you should automatically select the power level again. Using other modes may result in faster battery discharge.


What is Jeweller Signal Strength Test?

The Ajax protection system makes it possible to perform tests to check the functionality of the connected devices.

The tests do not start immediately, but within a period of 36 seconds when using the default settings. The start of the test time depends on the settings of the detector scanning period (the section on “Jeweller” in the Hub settings).

The test is available on: AJAX App > Devices > DEVICE > Settings > Jeweller signal strength test

The test makes it possible to determine the signal strength and stability in the assumed installation location.

In the test mode, the device exchanges data with the hub in real time, displaying the current signal strength in the Ajax app and at the same time using the LED on the detector.

The signal strength is:

  • Excellent when the antenna bars in the App shows 3 bars. On the detector itself a perfect signal strength is indicated by the LED, this lights up almost continuously with a short interruption once in 1.5 seconds.
  • Sufficient if the antenna bars in the App shows 2 bars. On the detector itself a sufficient signal strength is indicated by the LED, this flashes 5 times per second (flashes rapidly).
  • Bad if the antenna bars in the App shows 1 bar. On the detector itself, a poor signal strength is indicated by the LED, which blinks 2 times per second (blinks slowly).
  • No connection if the antenna bars in the App does not show a bar. On the detector itself, a disconnection is indicated by the LED, which gives fast flashes once in 1.5 seconds.

Test time of the device at the place of installation: at least 1 min. It is not mandatory to carry out the test until the end.

It is recommended to install the device in a location with protruding or sufficient signal bars.

If the signal strength is poor, we cannot guarantee stable operation of the security system. Take the necessary measures to improve the signal quality! First move the device at least, a displacement, even by 20 cm, can significantly improve the reception quality.

If the device still has a low or unstable signal strength after the displacement, use a radio signal range extender ReX.


Why doesn’t the detector have a signal with the Hub through the walls at a distance of 100 meters?

The instruction explains 2000 meters.

The maximum distance between the hub and the detector can be up to 2000 meters in open spaces. Walls, ceilings and other structures between the hub and the detector reduce the operating range several times. In this case, the maximum distance depends on the material, thickness and composition of the walls.


What’s Wing’s signal strength test?

This test shows the level and stability of the Wings radio protocol signal, which is used to send pictures of a motion detector with visual alarm verification to the hub. Perform a test to determine the best MotionCam installation location.

The test is available in the MotionCam menu:

AJAX App > Devices > MotionCAM > Settings > Wings signal strength test.

Timer and indication

In test mode, the device communicates in real time with the hub, displaying the current signal strength in the Ajax app and at the same time by means of LED indication.

The minimum test time of the device at the installation site is 1 minute. Performing the test before the timer completes the count is not mandatory.

Note that the test does not start immediately, but at the end of the device’s polling period specified in the hub settings (default up to 36 seconds).

Placement of the device

We recommend installing the unit in a location with an excellent or satisfactory signal strength (2-3 bar).

If the signal strength is poor, we cannot guarantee stable operation of the security system. In order to improve the signal strength, you should move the device, as a repositioning of up to 20 cm can significantly improve the quality of communication.


Is it possible to turn a hub into a radio signal extender?

Hubs have no function for controlling the radio signal extender. If you need to extend the coverage of your wireless network, use ReX.


How do I set the detector to the always active mode?

Go to the Devices tab, select the detector, go to the settings. Then activate the Always active mode . Now the detector remains active even if the Hub (alarm system) is switched off.


How much data does a Hub software update cost?

A Hub update is always less than 1 megabyte. It therefore has no major impact on the data bundle if only a SIM card is placed in the Hub.


Can the MotionCam detector be installed outside?

MotionCam motion detector is designed for indoor use only. Outdoor installation can lead to false alarms and in the worst case – to device failure. In addition, please note that bundled batteries at low temperatures can significantly reduce the detector’s operating time.


Where and how to install a carbon monoxide (CO) detector?

Carbon monoxide or CO – is a colourless and extremely toxic gas with no taste or smell formed as a result of combustion in the absence of sufficient oxygen.

Carbon monoxide can be released in a fire as well as from the following sources:

Domestic gas appliances, including heating and water boilers.

Grates, wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and other fireplaces.

Motor vehicles or fuel generators.

In addition, carbon monoxide can enter the room from outside, for example from a busy motorway.

The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is much greater in areas without fresh air and in areas with poor ventilation or clogged chimneys. Windy weather can lead to background shifts due to ventilation systems and chimneys, causing combustion products to accumulate in the room.


Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

Carbon monoxide has no odor or color, and humans cannot smell it. Only specialised detectors can detect dangerous concentrations of CO in the air.

The concentration of carbon monoxide of less than 0.001% (10 ppm) in the home is considered normal. A concentration of more than 0.052% (520 ppm) for two hours causes headaches, dizziness, nausea and a concentration of 0.1% (1,000 ppm) causes loss of consciousness. When the CO concentration in the air is 0.15% (1,500 ppm), a fatal outcome is possible.


How does carbon monoxide spread?

Carbon monoxide is released during combustion as part of a hot gas mixture and its density is less than that of air. Therefore, CO rises and accumulates near the ceiling. In order for a detector to detect dangerous concentrations of carbon monoxide in good time, it should be installed as high as possible.

AJAX FireProtect Plus – is a wireless fire detector with smoke, temperature and carbon monoxide sensors. The detector monitors safety in the room around the clock and immediately reports a fire or a dangerous level of CO. The detector runs on batteries for up to 4 years and can operate independently of a hub that reports a danger using the built-in siren.

The detector tests the smoke chamber and the CO sensor independently of each other and reports the need for dust removal or malfunction in a timely manner, and multiple detectors can trigger an alarm at the same time.


How does the FireProtect Plus detector detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide?

FireProtect Plus uses an integrated CO sensor (NAP-505) to detect hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. The response time of the detector in the event of an alarm depends on the level of carbon monoxide concentration in the air. The higher the concentration, the less time it takes to record an alarm using a detector. This working principle is attributed to the properties of the human body with regard to the absorption of carbon monoxide.


At what level of carbon monoxide does the FireProtect Plus detector sound an alarm?

FireProtect Plus reacts to carbon monoxide long before the first symptoms of poisoning occur and is then activated:

  • 85 minutes at a carbon monoxide concentration of 0,004% (40 ppm).
  • 60 to 70 minutes at a carbon monoxide concentration of 0,005% (50 ppm).
  • 10 to 20 minutes at a concentration of 0,01% (100 ppm).
  • Up to 1 minute at a concentration above 0,026% (260 ppm).

Loss of consciousness is possible at a CO concentration of 0.1% for 2 hours!

The detector stops reporting the dangerous level of carbon monoxide when the concentration drops to 40 ppm (0.004%) within one minute.


Within which type of building should the FireProtect Plus detector be installed?

According to the EN 50292 standard, carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in every room containing a potential source of carbon monoxide, as well as in every bedroom and room where occupants spend a lot of time or cannot hear the detector’s alarm.

By using the Ajax safety system, fire protection can be organised according to the potential threat:

  • There is a potential source of CO: install a FireProtect Plus detector in the room. If a potential source of CO has a gas outlet, such detectors should be installed in all rooms through which they pass.
  • There is no CO source, but there is a possibility of fire: Install FireProtect detectors.

In all rooms where the built-in sirens of fire detectors are not audible, install HomeSirene-room sirens (or more powerful outdoor StreetSirens).

In the event of an alarm, the hub alerts all users of the Ajax security system not only by activating the sirens, but also by push notifications in App, SMS and phone calls, if this type of notification is enabled. The Interconnected FireProtect Alarms function activates the built-in sirens of all fire detectors if at least one of them detects an alarm.


Where should FireProtect Plus be installed?

When installing the Ajax security system, make sure that the sirens of the fire detectors and the HomeSirene/Stray sirens are clearly audible. It is also desirable that the LED indication of the devices is visible.

According to the standard, when used in a studio apartment, a carbon monoxide detector should be as far away as possible from electrical kitchen appliances, but close to the bed.

FireProtect Plus can be installed on the wall or on the ceiling. For each installation method, the detector should be placed at a distance of 1 to 3 m from the potential source of carbon monoxide.

For rooms without a potential source of CO, the standard also recommends that Carbon Monoxide Alarms should be mounted on walls:

  • In the bedrooms – near the bed at the face of a sleeping person.
  • Along the corridors and stairwells – at a height of 0.5 to 1.5 metres above the floor.
  • In other areas where people spend a lot of time – near the workplaces and rest areas at the level of the face of a seated person.

Note that such placement of the FireProtect Plus detectors does not contribute to effective detection of smoke, only CO concentration and room temperature increase (less effective compared to ceiling mounting).

If the detector is mounted on the ceiling

The detector must be mounted at the highest point where hot air and smoke accumulate, at least 30 cm from the wall.

If there are any beams on the ceiling that protrude 30 cm or more from the ceiling level, the detector should be installed between each beam.

If you have a suspended ceiling, then the Smoke Alarm should be mounted on the surface. If the distance between the suspended ceiling and the main ceiling is more than 40 cm, the detectors are also mounted to the main ceiling. The fire load on the cables (probability of fire) should also be taken into account – see the fire standards of your region.

If you have a suspended ceiling, the detector is attached to a special construction for the installation of fire detectors above the suspended ceiling. If there is no such construction and you do not want to install the detector, the detector can be mounted on a wall.

If the detector is mounted on a wall

Mount the detector above a door or window, but at least 15 cm from the ceiling.

If there is a room divider, the detector should be installed on the same side as the potential source of carbon monoxide.

Do not install the detector:

  1. Outside.
  2. In places with fast air circulation (near the ceiling fan, air conditioner, extractor hood, open doors and windows).
  3. At a distance of less than one metre from the cooker and its vertical projection.
  4. Close to metal objects and mirrors that cause attenuation or shielding of radio signals.
  5. In a room with a temperature or humidity that is out of range.
  6. Near open flames.
  7. In an enclosed space (in a cabinet or behind a partition, curtain).
  8. In places where access to the detector is blocked.
  9. Above the sink.
  10. In the vicinity of kitchen appliances.

Wat is Interconnected FireProtect Alarms?

If one sensor detects fire or smoke, all FireProtect / FireProtect Plus (with firmware version 3.42 and higher) in the building can turn on their built-in sirens at the same time.

This feature is recommended by European fire standards, which require an alarm power of at least 85 dB within 3 meters of the sound source. This allows even the deepest sleepers to wake up in case of fire. And you can quickly switch off the activated devices using an Ajax app or KeyPad (by turning this option on in the settings).

To turn on the interconnection:

Go to Hub settings, Service item

Enable the Interconnected FireProtect Alarms option.


Where should I install the FireProtect detector?

The installation of a smoke detector at the highest point of the ceiling at a minimum distance of one meter from the lighting source and the vent pipe is recommended. If ceiling beams run across the ceiling and protrude 30 cm from the ceiling level, at least one detector should be placed between each pair of beams.


Can you install Hub 2 in an unheated room?

Correct operation of Hub 2 is guaranteed at a temperature of -10°C to +40°C and an air humidity of up to 75%.

Mounting Hub 2 in rooms with a different temperature mode may result in loss of communication with Ajax devices, and in the worst case – to failure of the device. Note that the battery life of the Hub’s battery can be significantly reduced at low temperatures.


I’ve installed several detectors in one room, but they all show different temperatures?

Each device measures the temperature independently with an internal sensor. The air circulation in a room, together with other factors, can cause slight inconsistencies in the measured temperatures. The temperature displayed in the Rooms tab is an average of all the detectors in a given room and may differ by 2-4°C from the ambient temperature.


How can I check that the detector is working correctly after installation?

To check that the unit is working properly, perform the detection area and signal strength tests.

The detection zone tests allow you to determine the distance at which the detector will detect alarms and protect it from false alarms. In test mode, the LED indicator lights up continuously and switches off during the alarm. To determine the detection area, use the unit’s LED indicator as a guide.

The Jeweller signal strength test can be used to determine the signal strength and stability in the potential installation location of the device.


Can I install the Ajax Hub horizontally? For example, on a table?

Yeah, as long as the test shows good enough radio communication. But you’ll still need to attach the Hub to the table with the screws provided. This is necessary to make sure that the alarm works when an intruder tries to dismantle the Ajax Hub.


Anti-masking and its implementation in AJAX outdoor detectors

In order to gain undetected access to an object protected by an external alarm system, intruders primarily sabotage motion detectors. As soon as the security system is switched off, they enter the territory and block the view of the motion detectors, i.e. they mask them.

To protect the security system against this type of sabotage, external detectors are equipped with anti-masking systems. The most advanced anti-masking systems respond to all typical tricks: placing obstacles in front of the sensors, painting the body or covering it with a cloth, or even painting the detector.

Indoor motion detectors are in rare cases equipped with anti-masking systems. They are used in parallel with other types of detectors (e.g. window opening or glass breakage detectors) so that they do not allow invisible penetration in the event of sabotage.

Antimasking system in Ajax detectors

The anti-masking security system of MotionProtect Outdoor detector includes three infrared sensors and a special software algorithm.

MotionProtect Outdoor is protected against all cases of masking:

  • when an obstacle is placed in front of one or both detector lenses
  • when one or both detector lenses have been overpainted or something has been stuck over them.
  • when the housing of the detector is coated with a transparent varnish (usually urethane)

It takes 1 second to 5 minutes to detect a masking attempt by MotionProtect Outdoor, depending on the protection mode and type of masking.

As soon as a threat is identified, the detector lights up the green LED for 1 second and sends messages to all users and to the security company.

The MotionProtect Outdoor anti-masking system complies with the integrity level of the safety standard EN 50131. This means that the system is ready to confront intruders with professional skills and knowledge.


What is the temperature compensation of the motion detectors?

Motion detector follows the movement of the thermal object. The person and other objects in front of the detector are detected as thermal spots. The sensor follows these heat points and if they move, the detector will sound an alarm.

The motion detector responds to the movement of bodies (heat spots) with the temperature close to the temperature of the human body. When the room temperature is about the same as the body temperature of the person, the correct operation of the detector is not guaranteed unless a temperature compensation is entered.

The temperature compensation technique is used in the following detectors:

MotionProtect / MotionProtect Plus / MotionProtect Outdoor / MotionProtectCurtain /CombiProtect.

This is performed programmatically, at the detector level. The detector periodically measures the ambient temperature for correction. The detector uses a table of correction factors, these coefficients depend on the temperature measured by the detector.

Correction factors are used at temperatures from +14 °С to +42 °С. These correction factors help the detector to detect human movement in an environment close to human temperature.


What should you do if a detector or device loses communication with the Hub?

A device may lose communication with the Hub for the following reasons:

  • Low radio signal strength.
  • Obstacles along the radio signal path.
  • High sound level in the radio channel.
  • Interference in the device.

What to do if a device loses communication with the Hub:

Step one:

Check the noise to power ratio in the radio channel using the Ajax application. Go to the Devices Hub menu and check the value in the Average Noise (dBm) field. Acceptable value: -80 dBm and lower. If the value is higher than -80 dBm, the Hub will be installed in a location characterized by a high level of radio interference and must be moved. Note that the number is MIN, so if there is a value of -90 or -95, for example, then this is good!

Step 2:

If the noise level is normal – move the device that is losing communication with the hub and check the signal strength.

Perform the signal strength test for at least 3 minutes to more accurately determine the strength and stability of the communication at the installation site.

The signal strength update rate in the Ajax application depends on the Jeweller settings and is set to 36 seconds by default. This speed does not allow the changes in signal strength to be traced over time.

If the device is in the direct line of sight with the hub (the hub is visible from the installation location of the device) and has a signal strength of 2 bars or less, it is very likely that the device is broken. In this case, the device must be submitted for a comprehensive diagnosis.

To submit the device for a diagnosis, please contact Ajax Systems Support or the place of purchase.

Step 3:

If the device to be installed at the new installation site has a stable signal strength of 2-3 bar, check its operation for one week. If the device still loses communication with the Hub, it is most likely broken and needs to be submitted for a comprehensive diagnosis.

Test, if you have a device similar to the defective one:

For example, there is a problem with a MotionProtect motion detector, and you have a detector of this model that functions properly in another location.

Switch the malfunctioning one with the non-functioning one to find out the cause:

  • A faulty device still loses communication with the Hub – it is very likely that it is broken and needs to be submitted for a comprehensive diagnosis.
  • A working device loses communication with the Hub – the problem lies at the installation location. Select another installation location.
  • Both devices lose communication with the Hub – the problem has to do with both the installation location and the device. Submit the defective device for comprehensive diagnosis and then install it at a different location.


How long are MotionCam detector photos stored in Ajax applications?

The storage time for photos in Ajax applications is unlimited.

But don’t forget that up to 500 recent events can be stored in the event feed of the applications. Previous events are deleted.


What happens to the detectors if the hub loses connection to ReX?

If the connection between the hub and ReX is lost, all devices connected to the range extender will also lose the connection to the hub.

By copying the system information from the hub, ReX creates an autonomous group of devices and responds directly to events. If ReX continues to communicate with the connected devices when the connection to the hub is lost, ReX takes over the role of the control panel: it receives an alarm signal from the detector and activates the siren.

Users will not be able to manage the security modes of ReX and the devices connected to the range extender until the connection between the range extender and the hub has been restored.


After closing the door and activating the detector, there is a message to close the door again. What do you have to do?

The magnet is too far away from the drive switch. Reinstall the magnet closer to the sensor or use a larger magnet. Magnets should be installed parallel to the main unit, on the right side.


Why does the detector go off even when the system is not switched on?

The detector is set to Always active. If you do not need this level of protection, you can deactivate it in the detector settings.


How long does it take for the Hub to detect a communication fault with a detector?

By default, the Hub is set to “ping detectors every 36 seconds”, and to issue a warning after 30 undelivered pings. Under these settings, it takes about 18 minutes for the system to recognize a communication failure. You can adjust these settings in the Hub → Jeweller settings. If you set the Ping to 6 seconds, and give a warning after 6 undelivered pings, a warning will follow after 36 seconds. Of course, this will affect the expected battery life.


How long does it take for the Hub to detect a server failure?

The detection time of a communication failure with the server depends on two parameters in the Hub Settings Service:

  • Server Ping Interval. The period of pings through the Hub to the Ajax Cloud server is set in the range of 10 to 300 seconds. The recommended and default value is 30 seconds.
  • Connection error Alarm Delay. This is the delay needed to reduce the risk of a false case of loss of communication with the server. The delay can be set from 30 to 600 seconds. The recommended and default value is 300 seconds.

The connection delay is activated after 4 failed pings.

The time until the message about the loss of communication between the Hub and the server is generated is calculated using the formula: (Ping interval * 4) + Connection delay

With the default settings, the server records the loss of the hub after 7 minutes:

(30 s * 4) + 300 s = 7 minutes

By reducing the time of recording, the loss of communication with the Hub can be achieved by reducing the values of the ping interval and connection delay. But this increases the chance of a false connection loss in case of an unstable Internet connection.


How do you disable an alert when the Hub loses connection to the server?

When the hub loses connection to the server, Ajax apps can alert users with a standard push notification sound or a siren sound (enabled by default).

To disable the siren sound when the hub loses connection to the server in the Ajax app:

Go to Service settings of the hub (Device Hub Settings Service).

Disable the Deactivate alerts option when disconnecting from the server.


Can multiple security systems work at one location?

Yes, they can. However, a distance of at least 1 meter must be maintained between the devices and the hub and between the hubs to ensure correct operation. At this distance, the radio frequency background of the Hub antenna can influence the signal strength, interfere with the devices or disconnect from the devices. Hubs do not interfere with other devices or with each other if the minimum distance is maintained.

Use the signal strength test to check the operation of the connected devices and select the best places to install them.

Operation of multiple hubs within the same Internet network:

Different hubs can operate locally within the same Internet network, whether they are connected via Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi, GSM and Jeweller technologies work on different frequencies and do not interfere with each other.


Multiple hubs can be managed via the same application

You can manage numerous Ajax security systems using Ajax applications. To switch between systems (hubs) use the menu at the top of the application screen.

The number of hubs in the application may be limited by the hardware capacity of the smartphone/tablet. With a modern smartphone with Android version 4.1 and higher or iOS 9.1 and higher you can manage more than 50 hubs.


How can the protection be switched on/off according to the schedule?

Open the Ajax app, select the hub from the menu at the top of the screen and go to the Devices tab.

Select the hub from the list of devices and go to the hub settings by clicking the gear icon.

Go to the Security Schedule menu.

Click Create scenario if you are creating a scenario for the first time, or Add scenario if scenarios have already been created in the security system.

What is the system integrity check?

The system integrity check is the parameter responsible for checking the condition of all detectors and devices before they are switched on.

This function is mandatory for professional security systems. It prevents the activation of the protection mode if the window is not closed in the room, if the detector housing is open or if communication with one of the devices has been lost.

Restrictions can be managed in the hub settings, in the “Service” menu. The shutdown options are possible if the arming is activated in two steps after a fault warning. Or complete shutdown of the protection, even in the event of a minor fault. All users of the hub receive notifications of successful and failed attempts with a fault list.

Fault list:

  • Hub:
  1. Communication with at least one device is lost
  2. No external power supply
  3. The battery charge is less than 17%.
  4. The sabotage is open (the lid has been removed)

How to disable the Notification Center panel of the AJAX application in the Android taskbar?

Android smartphones with a battery saver mode (power saver) can block application push notifications. As a result, there is a risk that critical alarms and events related to the Ajax security system are missing. To ensure the delivery of notifications, we have added the Keep-Alive Service option for the Ajax application. This is enabled by default.

Smartphones with Android 8.0 version and the latest version always display the notification center panel in the notification bar when the Keep-Alive Service option is enabled.

To disable the Notification Center Panel:

  • Open the Ajax application.
  • Go to the menu (three horizontal bars in the upper left corner of the screen).
  • Go to the Application Settings menu and deactivate the Save Service option.
  • Minimize the Ajax application.
  • Go to the Smartphone Settings menu, Applications.
  • Select the Ajax application from the list and click the Stop button.
  • Start the Ajax application. The Message centre panel is no longer displayed in the bar.

After disabling the “Application Restart” option, it is necessary to check the correct operation of push notifications. For example, by switching the night mode on and off. If push notifications are received incorrectly or with a delay – enable the Application Restart option again.


What does the crossed-out eye icon in the MotionCam notification mean?

The images are not accompanied by MotionCam alarms, and messages are displayed with a crossed-out eye icon when the memory buffer of the detector or hub is full.

The reason for this may be that there are many triggerings combined with interference in radio communication or loss of communication between the hub and the server.


What is the minimum GPRS speed required for the Hub to operate correctly?

Our wireless data transmission protocol will continue to operate at a GPRS rate of 0.5 kbit/s.


Can Hub 2 work with a single SIM card or with only a wired Internet connection?

Yes, the Ajax security system can work when only one of the communication channels is used.

Nevertheless, we recommend connecting all communication channels as one channel may stop functioning. For example, if you no longer have a balance on your account or as a result of a malfunction in the operator’s equipment.


Does Hub 2 also support 3G/4G data transmission?

Hub 2 only uses 2G technology for data transmission over the mobile Internet connection.


Which communication channels does Hub 2 use and which one is the most important?

Hub 2 uses 3 communication channels for forwarding alarms to users and the control room of a security organisation: Ethernet (main communication channel) and two 2G SIM cards (backup channel). If one of the channels is temporarily unavailable, the system automatically switches to the other channel without delay.


Which SIM cards are suitable for Hub 2?

You can install a SIM card from any operator that supports 2G Internet in Hub 2.

Before installing the SIM card in the Hub, you must disable the PIN code request in the settings menu (to do this, you must insert the card into a phone). In addition, your mobile account must have a positive balance or bonus megabytes of traffic.

We recommend inserting two SIM cards in Hub 2 at the same time, while one SIM card may no longer work if you run out of balance or if there is a malfunction on the operator’s side.


How can I check the number of a SIM card in a Hub?

The SIM card number can be determined in two ways:

Via the Ajax application: go to Devices Hub Settings GSM. In the menu opposite the SIM card, the number is displayed.

The operation of the function depends on whether the manufacturer has recorded the number information on the SIM card.

Using USSD code: go to GSM (Devices Hub Settings GSM) settings and select the SIM card. In the USSD code request field, enter the control code for the number (provided by your operator) and click on “Check Balance”. Once the request has been made, the SIM card number is displayed under the Check Balance button.


How can you connect devices from ReX back to the hub?

To assign the device to the hub:

  • Go to ReX Settings in the Ajax application (Devices ReX Settings ).
  • Click on Pair with Device.
  • Turn off the devices that need to work directly from the hub.
  • Click Back to save the settings.


How do you add devices to ReX?

To assign the device to ReX:

  • Go to ReX Settings in the Ajax application (Devices ReX Settings ).
  • Click on Pair with Device.
  • Select the devices that should work via the range extender.
  • Click Back to save the settings.

The devices that work through the range extender have RE icons in the application’s list of Hub devices. In addition, the latter is also specified in the device’s menu, in the Working via ReX field.


Can ReX run on battery power?

ReX is designed to operate on a 110V-240V AC, 50/60 Hz power supply. In the event of a power failure, the ReX is equipped with a spare battery that provides up to 35 hours of range extender operation.


What is a sabotage / tamper?

Tamper is a miniature button on the motherboard. It is released when the lid is opened and as a result of an attempt to disconnect and/or lift the device from the surface, initiating an event.

When the sabotage is released, the Hub sends push notifications and SMS messages (if this type of notification is enabled) to all users of the security system and also communicates the event to the central monitoring station of the security company.

When the sabotage is released, Ajax applications display the status Opened in the Device menu cover field. In addition, a fault badge appears on the device icon.


Is it necessary to remove the batteries from the siren after connecting the external power supply?

The connection of an external power supply is recommended in order to avoid a rapid discharge of the batteries in case of installation in places characterised by low temperatures or when frequent activations of the siren are reported.

After connecting the external power supply, it is not recommended to remove the batteries from the siren, as they act as a reserve power source.


How can I restore the Hub to the factory settings?

Press and hold the power button (the Ajax logo will turn off) for 30 seconds until the logo flashes red. This will remove all detector connections, room configurations and user settings. User accounts remain connected to the system.


Where can I configure the primary channel as Ethernet and the SIM card as backup?

The system works standard on Ethernet / Wi-Fi with GSM connection as backup communication channel. You cannot change the priority of the channels.


How much traffic does the Hub use via GPRS?

Volume data depends on the settings and the number of devices assigned to the Hub. In normal alarm-free mode, the Hub uses up to 30 Megabytes per month.


All you can do in the AJAX app is look at the manual, nothing else. Why is this?

If you look in the Devices tab, and then select the Hub, you can use the cogwheel in the upper-right corner of the screen to access the Hub and system settings. You’ll then see multiple choices of settings on the screen. These can only be selected under the following conditions:

  • The Hub is connected to the Internet
  • The system is not turned on. In other words: The alarm system must not be in “guard mode”.

Once the above is met, the color of the menu items changes from light gray to darker, and are selectable.
